Transition Ministry Updates (Summer 2019)

The people of the Diocese of Central New York celebrate the following clergy calls and transitions:

Clergy New to the Diocese

St. David’s Episcopal Church in DeWitt has called the Rev. Daniel Handschy to serve as priest-in-charge beginning August 11, 2019.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1987, Handschy has recently concluded a tenure of over 26 years as rector of the Church of the Advent in Crestwood Missouri. He has also served parishes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Handschy holds a PhD in Historical Theology from Saint Louis University. During his time as rector of the Church of the Advent, he taught ethics as an adjunct professor at Eden Theological Seminary, and served as the dean and instructor of theology at the Episcopal School for Ministry in the Diocese of Missouri. Prior to ordination, Hansdschy was an engineer.

Christ Episcopal Church in Manlius has called the Rev. Richard K. Klafehn to serve as interim rector beginning August 1, 2019.

Klafehn was ordained in the Lutheran Church in 1983 and has served in rural, suburban, and large and small city congregations in Illinois and New York State, settled and transitional positions, Lutheran and Episcopal.

A native of rural Upstate New York, Klafehn studied at Valparaiso University, Yale Divinity School, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He received intentional interim ministry training through the Interim Ministry Network.

He has been active in various social service ministries and local ecumenical organizations, including faith-based community organizing.  He is a member of Bread for the World.

Calls Within the Diocese

The Church of the St. Lawrence in Alexandria Bay has called the Rev. Lisa J. Busby as vicar beginning May 26, 2019. Busby is the rector of Christ Church, Clayton and St. John’s Church, Cape Vincent.

Zion Episcopal Church in Windsor has called the Rev. Geoffrey Doolittle as parish priest beginning July 1, 2019.

Retirements

The Rev. Ed Murphy has retired as of July 1, 2019.

Licensed to Officiate in the Diocese

The Rev. Molly MacWade and the Rev. Charles Bang (ELCA) have been licensed to officiate in the Diocese of Central New York.
