Transition Ministry Updates (Spring 2022)

The people of the Diocese of Central New York celebrate the following clergy calls and transitions:

Clergy New to the Diocese

The Rt. Rev. DeDe Duncan-Probe has called the Rev. Dr. Thomas Ferguson to serve as Canon for Formation and Mission in the Diocese of Central New York beginning June 1, 2022. Read her announcement here.

The Rev. Dr. Tom Ferguson will serve as Canon for Formation and Mission in the Diocese of Central New York beginning June 1, 2022.

Since 2016, the Rev. Dr. Tom Ferguson has served as Rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sandwich, MA.  Prior to that, he was Academic Dean and Professor of Church History at Bexley Hall Seabury Western Seminary from 2011-2016, and from 2001-2011 served on the staff of the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church as Deputy for Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations. In the Diocese of Massachusetts, Tom has been co-chair of the Ecumenical and Interreligious Commission and served on the Racial Justice Task Force, and was a founding member of the Faith Communities Environmental Network of Cape Cod and Sandwich For All, a community-based organization committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Tom has a BA in Russian Language and Literature from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School, and a PhD in the History of Christian Life and Thought from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific/Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. He is married to the Rev. Shannon Kelly, who currently serves as Director of Faith Formation on the staff of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. They have a son who is a junior in high school, and have family connections to Ithaca, New York.

Calls within the Diocese

Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse has called the Rev. Christine J. Day to serve as Long-Term Supply Priest beginning October 10, 2021.

Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Sherrill has called the Rev. Georgina Hegney to serve as Long-Term Supply Priest beginning January 1, 2022.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church in East Syracuse has called the Rev. Julie Calhoun-Bryant to serve as Priest-in-Charge beginning January 1, 2022. Calhoun-Bryant continues as Rector of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Syracuse.

Retirements and Departures

The Rev. Toppie Bates retired from her ministry as Priest Associate at St. James’, Skaneateles in 2021 (Learn More).

The Rev. Ana Rivera-Georgescu resigned from her ministry at Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse in October 2021.

The Rev. Perry Mouncey completed her term as Long-Term Supply Priest for St. Matthew’s, Moravia in October 2021.

The Rev. Cole Gruberth resigned from his ministry as Rector of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Slaterville Springs in November 2021. He began a new call as Priest Associate with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar, California on November 28, 2021.

The Rev. Dr. Gerard Beritela retired from his ministry as Vicar of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in East Syracuse and Vicar of the Church of the Saviour in Syracuse on December 31, 2021.

The Rev. Holly Evans retired from her ministry as Rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Copenhagen on January 1, 2022.

The Very Rev. Ninon Hutchinson resigned from her ministry as Priest-in-Charge of St. John’s, Black River in January 2022.

The Rev. John Crosswaite completed his term as Parish Priest with St. James’ Episcopal Church in Clinton in February 2022.
