The Diocesan Lay Preacher Program recently graduated and commissioned Marian Thompson and Chol Majok. They join a ministry of licensed lay preachers who serve in a supply capacity for congregations in the diocese.
The Lay Preacher Program is taught by the Rev. Dr. Rebecca Drebert and the Very Rev. Scott Parnell. It is a rigorous two year program that includes biblical studies/exegesis, episcopal/anglican polity, theology, and homiletical structure. Additionally, participants in the program have a personal preaching mentor and deliver four sermons a year in a congregation (in addition to their work for the program).
“This course has strengthened my understanding of our identity as Episcopalians and why we approach Scripture the way we do,” said Marian Thompson. “It was fabulous.”
Those interested in applying for the 2026-2027 year should email Canon David Stickley for more information and submit their application by August 9. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by August 16. The cohort meets four times a year at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Skaneateles.
