What is a HYMNATHON?
Hymnathon: Singing through a hymnal from cover to cover in a single event. Hymns are a concise musical form, often 16 bars like a good blues riff. Poetry expresses faith ideas and experience in fresh ways. The hymnal is a powerful source for spiritual inspiration.
The Trinity Choir’s Hymnathon is a fundraiser for the choir’s Cleveland and Toronto choir tour October 10-14, 2019. Choir members are receiving pledges for each hymn they are able to sing, additionally donations can be made to the choir. All funds raised will help reach the financial goal for their tour.
The Choir will begin Friday, September 20th at 5:00 p.m., singing a hymn a minute from the Episcopal Church’s 1982 Hymnal until 9:00 p.m. There is a 5-minute break at each half hour. The choir begins at Hymn #1 at 5:00 p.m., so at 9:00 p.m. will finish with Hymn #240. These are the hymns for Morning, Evening, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost.
On Saturday September 21st, the choir will start again at 9:00 a.m. with Hymn #241, and sing until 5:00 p.m. when the national anthem, Hymn #720, concludes the Hymnathon. At any given time at least four singers will be present; the hope is to have a large group on hand to start the Friday session and close the Saturday session.
The event takes place in Trinity Memorial Church’s chancel with the organ. The piano will be used for a few accompaniments, and some of the Gregorian hymns will be sung unaccompanied.
If you would like to support the Choir in this effort, they would appreciate your generosity! Any donation may be sent to Trinity Memorial Church, 44 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905, with the notation: Choir Tour.
All are welcome to join the Choir at the Hymnathon in the church sanctuary for any or all singing of the Hymnal.
