Listening, Learning, and Responding to the Climate Crisis

Dear friends,

I am writing to invite you to be part of this year’s initiative: Listening, Learning, and Responding to the Climate Crisis. This initiative will be an ‘educate to action’ offering that utilizes books, media, and conversation groups to encourage advocacy work, to empower people to effective action.

The climate crisis is the greatest threat to our human existence and disproportionately impacts people of color and people living in poverty. Our Mission Statement, “Learning to love God, one another, and all God’s creation,” compels us to act and to respond to the climate crisis as part of our commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Last year, in response to our Diocesan Rule of Life, Mission and Vision Statements, we dedicated ourselves to Listening, Learning, and Responding to Institutional Racism in our world. As a result, our Anti-Racism and Racial Reconciliation Team now includes over 40 members who continue to educate and advocate for social justice and equality. It is my hope that this year’s initiative for the Climate Crisis will have a similar impact by helping us to establish a Climate Care Team.

My invitation is to be part of an initial conversation to assist in planning this year’s initiative. In preparation for a first gathering, I invite your prayerful consideration of the following:

  • What are three things we might invite people to do this year to reduce their carbon footprint?
  • How might the diocese adapt our ministry in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint?
  • How might we connect with other dioceses and organizations and collaborate?
  • Whose voice has not been heard and whom might we include?

I hope you will join me for a Zoom on Tuesday, May 25th from 6:00-7:30pm and be part of planning an initiative that will help our diocese effectively respond to the climate crisis. Please RSVP to my assistant, Sarah Alamond at [email protected], and she will send you the Zoom link for this meeting. I also encourage you to invite others that may be interested in this effort. Please note, all are welcome and do not need to be Episcopalians or members of the church to attend.

With hope and peace on this journey,
