Leadership Day: Called, Equipped, Ready

“We must grow up in every way…into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together…promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.”

Ephesians 4

A day of inspiration, resources, and worship for church leaders.
Designed for leaders of every kind: clergy, vestry members, ministry teams, volunteers and staff.

Saturday, March 23

8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Doubletree Hotel, 6301 NY-298, East Syracuse, New York

Workshops

Your registration includes breakfast, lunch, worship and these three focused workshops. You don’t have to pick and choose from different workshop options.

Session I: Diocesan Visioning

Presenters: The Rt. Rev. DeDe Duncan-Probe, Bishop of Central New York; The Rev. Canon John Crosswaite, canon to the ordinary for the Diocese of Central New York; The Rev. Canon Carrie Schofield-Broadbent, canon for transition and congregational development for the Diocese of Central New York

How can transparency, curiosity, and other shared values make your leadership team stronger, more productive, and more inspired for ministry?

Bishop DeDe and our two Canons will share how we as a diocese are engaging these values and practices in our ongoing visioning process for the Episcopal Church in CNY. You’ll learn more about how engaging the visioning process can help smart teams in your parish build trust and work well together in ministry at every level.

Session II: Financial and Fiduciary Responsibilities of a Vestry—What All Church Leaders Need to Know

Presenter: Ms. Martha Berry, Esq., vice-chancellor of the Diocese of Central New York and the Rev. Steve White, treasurer of the Diocese of Central New York

What goes into a well-run church? What are the legal and financial responsibilities of a church vestry? We’re all responsible for ensuring that our church leaders are stewarding financial and human resources appropriately. Even if you’re not currently a vestry member, you’ll still want to hear this information.

Session III: Marketing Your Congregation from Deep Gladness

Presenters: The Rev. Paul Frolick, rector of St. Matthew’s, Liverpool; Ms. Meredith Kadet Sanderson, director of communications for the Diocese of Central New York

Theologian Frederick Beuchner says, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” Marketing your congregation is about identifying and deepening the way that your congregation lives out and expresses its “deep gladness” and connects this gladness to hungers for God within and beyond the congregation.

You’ll learn about practical exercises you can do together in your parish to discover your parish’s identity, learn about your neighbors, and connect to them effectively.

Worship

Leadership Day will conclude with a service of Holy Eucharist led by Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe, recognizing and giving thanks for our diverse lay and ordained ministries.

We’ll celebrate our shared call to ministry by renewing our baptismal and ordination vows together. Bishop DeDe will also bless the sacramental oils used by our clergy in healing prayers and baptisms throughout the year. This Leadership Day is one of three “Renewal of Vows and Blessing of the Oils” services in the diocese in March. The other two will be listed on the diocesan calendar as soon as details are finalized. Clergy: please bring traveling vessels to transport oils.

Thank you to our Liturgy and Worship Team—lay and ordained folks from throughout the diocese—for planning these services.
