Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Adams

Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Adams is a small parish located in rural Jefferson County, New York, about 60 miles north of Syracuse. Our church was founded in 1849 and has served God in our local community continuously for 174 years. One of our founders, Henry B. Whipple, became the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota and was noted for his humanitarian efforts on behalf of Native Americans in the Midwest. He is the subject of a book titled “Lincoln’s Bishop: A President, a Priest and the Fate of 300 Dakota
Sioux Warriors” by Gustav Niebuhr. Adams Emmanuel has begun a search for a priest to serve our congregation on a half-time basis. We are an active congregation of committed Christians looking to serve God, each other and our community. Our motto is “Loving God, Serving People; Serving God, Loving People.”

We have been blessed by the good work of many priests over the years, most recently by the ministry and friendship of our parish priest, the Rev. Jon F. Lavelle, for the past two years. His spiritual leadership renewed an already active parish, encouraged our lay ministries and strengthened congregants’ relationship with Jesus Christ.

Lay people are active participants in our services, leading Morning Prayer and serving as lay Eucharistic ministers, lectors and acolytes. For many years we have hosted an ecumenical men’s fellowship group and a women’s Bible study group. Emmanuel has faithful and excellent teachers of our children’s Sunday School, and lay people have led adult classes as well. Our lay Eucharistic visitors take communion to those who cannot attend church.

Members of Emmanuel coordinate many outreach ministries, including community dinners, Operation Christmas Child and Live More Ministries, an ecumenical women’s fellowship organization. Emmanuel provides numerous Christmas stockings to underprivileged children.

Our services are filmed on Zoom for parishioners who cannot attend in person.

What are we looking for in a priest?

We are seeking a passionate spiritual leader who is interested in getting to know us, learning our stories and joining our faith community. We look for skills that include biblical preaching and teaching and the ability to help people apply scriptural truths to their lives. We seek a priest who has a heart for pastoral care. We hope that our next pastor enjoys leading Bible studies and working with our lay leaders.

We look for a spiritual leader who has deep faith, enjoys being a priest, and is a people person. We seek someone who can organize services and Bible studies,
work with children as well as adults, provide pastoral care and encourage lay participation in services. We see ourselves as a warm, welcoming community of people excited about growing spiritually and adding new people to our congregation. Christ Episcopal Church, Binghamton

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Liverpool

St. Mathew’s is part of the Diocese of Central New York and is located within walking distance of the heart of the Village of Liverpool. Our village boasts a lovely park on Onondaga Lake with trails for running, biking, and picnicking. Restaurants, cafés, and shopping abound and we are a short drive from the nearby City of Syracuse.

The people of St. Mathew’s have forged strong bonds of love nurtured by the power of prayer and worship. We have an active and lively church school for children of all ages, and the strong leadership of our lay ministers, vestry, teachers, and volunteers. We maintain a visible presence in our community through our many outreach activities and by the warm and welcoming acceptance of people from all walks of life.

The first church service for St. Mathew’s was held on September 21, 1941. St. Mathew’s is a Level III congregation exhibiting a high degree of flexibility. We are an all-inclusive
church welcoming anyone seeking Christian community in the ways of Jesus Christ. At St. Mathew’s “All are welcome” is how we live. Three Churches: Afton, Greene, Oxford

Our three parishes have shared a priest successfully for about twelve years from 2011 to 2023. The percentage of time spent by clergy at each parish was Zion-40%, St. Paul’s-35%, and St. Ann’s-25%. As we search for a priest to serve our three parishes, we hope to find someone who can provide the same commitment. At our first meeting in July of 2023 to discuss the transition process, it was clear from those present that the relationship between our parishes is strong. And, we continue to have a positive influence in our communities through outreach and other programs. As we begin the search process and pray for guidance, it is our hope that we can find a priest who feels called to be a part of this journey with us.

The people of St. James’ wish to continue the momentum that has been building as we have grown into an active program church with varied spiritual and educational opportunities and numerous ministries and outreach. In developing this Parish Profile, the Search Committee sought input from the parish by holding several listening sessions and conducting a parish-wide survey, the results of which informed this summary of the essential skills that we are seeking:

  • Excellent Preacher: The ability to regularly deliver thought provoking, relevant and engaging sermons that challenge us to grow in our faith and service to God and God’s people.
  • Collaborative Manager: A servant leader who will work collaboratively as a team with staff, Vestry and lay ministry leaders, listening with an open heart and mind, learning from experience, and offering new and fresh ideas with a collective vision.
  • Gifted Liturgist: The ability, interest, and desire to plan and conduct Episcopal based liturgical services in a variety of different styles (traditional and contemporary) at multiple weekly services and special services throughout the liturgical year.
  • Pastoral Caregiver and Counselor: The ability and desire to provide compassionate care for our parishioners and attend to their personal, emotional and spiritual needs, especially during challenging times in their lives, and a willingness to visit parishioners at home or in the hospital as needed. The desire to support existing lay pastoral care leaders and to raise up new ones.
  • Shepherds Church Growth and Development: A shepherd who will guide us on our journey of faith and help us to maintain and build a strong church community by: inspiring members to be actively engaged and helping them to discover their own gifts for ministry and service; exploring new ways to attract new members, particularly young families, children and teens; and fostering stewardship as a faith practice.

About St. Thomas

St. Thomas’ is a small rural victorian-era church located in Slaterville Springs, NY.  Our parishioners form a vibrant and caring community, unified in its determination to worship and thrive with the help of a dedicated part-time rector.  We are a diverse, yet cohesive group, inquiring and inclusive.  We value traditional services with music as an integral component.  We are also open to more modern and progressive approaches to liturgy and theology.  St. Thomas’ taps the talent in the room to host centering prayer, evening prayer, and theological discussions.  Many congregants have strong personal passions which vary from prayer to peace, food security and social justice.  Despite our small numbers, the parish has consistently found ways to engage with the larger world, for example, by partnering with the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, sponsoring a refugee family from Laos, Episcopal Relief and Development, United Thank Offering, and volunteering at a local food pantry.  We have also nurtured several parishioners (including our last rector) who sought to deepen their commitment to the faith by formal study leading to some form of ministry.

We are seeking a part-time rector who will encourage the spiritual development of the congregation; maintain a fine musical tradition; seek to make Jesus’ commandment to love one another relevant to daily life; is willing to preach in a manner which relates to the spiritual life of the community, contemporary issues, and social justice.

Director of Children’s Education (Part-Time) - Christ Church, Manlius

Christ Church in Manlius, New York seeks a nurturing, loving, and dependable director for our children’s education program. Responsibilities including care for all children up to the age of eighteen in the following ways:

Choose and develop curriculum for school-aged children ages five to fourteen
Organize and recruit teachers for each group of children
Develop and nurture a loving, Christ-centered environment that welcomes children, teachers, and parents
Work with the rector and the nursery attendant to organize children’s education at Christ Church
Help make children feel loved, safe, and open to God’s loving presence
Follow and be compliant with all Christ Church policies regarding health and safety
Undergo diocesan training requirements to keep children safe

The Children Education Director will work six hours per week, and these hours are mostly flexible. The Director will need to be present during Sunday worship hours from 9:30 to 11:30 during the autumn, winter, and summer; 8:30 to 11:30 during the summer. Additional hours will be needed during special events or high holy days like Christmas and Easter. Pay is $5959.86 yearly.

Candidates must be experienced in caring for children and infants; be able to adapt to and interact with a variety of children’s personalities and needs; and be able to lift 30 pounds. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, complete CPR training for children, pass a background check, provide a record of immunization and TB test results, and provide two references.

Part-Time Administrator - St. John's, Ithaca

St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ithaca seeks a Part-Time Parish Administrator. The Parish Administrator provides administrative support for the Rector and carries out the general business of the parish. The work includes data and records management as well as publications and mailings.

We seek a candidate with a strong working knowledge of standard software, including G-Suite, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, as well as a willingness to learn specialized church membership and accounting software. The candidate must work independently and track short, medium, and long-term tasks. The Parish Administrator will be a resource person for both members and non-members, and a welcoming and responsive presence in our church’s office.

This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours per week, with occasional increased hours, and a preferred schedule of Monday to Thursday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Organist - Zion, Rome

Zion is actively seeking a new director of Music.  We have a wonderful 74 year old Noack Opus #79 organ, and a Baldwin concert grand piano.  Our Sunday service is at 9:00 am every Sunday, in addition to various holidays.  We have  a small, but interested congregation, and would like to have a lead musician, because we don’t all read music.  The position is for one person to do all the music: pick hymns, lead choir, play organ and/or piano at all services, and  meet with clergy.  We no longer have a choir, but would love to restart if we find the right music leader.   We expect the musician to play every service- or find a suitable substitute, pick all hymns for services, work with the clergy on choices, prepare both a Prelude and a Postlude for each Sunday service, be present at monthly Vestry meetings as needed, be very familiar with the Episcopal services and make use of the Hymnal and Book of Common Prayer.  We would give 2 Sundays off for first calendar year- musician must find substitute.  If interested, please contact the Parish Office – Annette, at Zion Episcopal Church, 140 W.
