John Rohde, who has been serving as the Priest-in-Charge at Saints Peter and John in Auburn has been called to a new ministry as the rector of St. Matthew’s in Liverpool beginning this fall. Take a moment to read what John had to say when we reached out to him this summer.

What has your journey as an ordained person been like?

Well, despite my grey hair, I’ve been a priest for a little less than 5 years. I started during the pandemic, and as we all know, a very unique time.  It made us all learn how to do things digitally, which I never anticipated.  These online activities have been more rewarding than I would have ever guessed. But, for sure, never a class you’d get in seminary. I have also been blessed with the privilege of being with my sisters and brothers during their more difficult and celebratory times in their lives.

What is your life like outside of ministry?

I have been a working and teaching musician my whole adult life. It’s not something I consider a hobby. I now know it’s another aspect of my ministry. But for fun, my wife and I like to watch movies and stand up comics.

What called out to you about St. Matthew’s that led you to enter their discernment/search process?

In all honesty, I wasn’t actively pursuing another call. But the Spirit led people at St. Matthews to reach out to me and we started a conversation. They know me from my time there in my first field education. This is back when the current Bishop of MD was the rector there.  They know me and I know them.  I’m grateful for what I believe is a very good fit.

What is your hope/dream for the ministry of your new parish?

My mentors (now) Bishop Carrie and Fr. Paul have done great work there. My prayer is to pick up where they left off and move forward. To spread the Good News that people are loved no matter what, and that they will never be alone.
